Eurobodalla Shire Council divisional manager of works Tony Swallow said old 450mm pipes under the Narooma pool car park would be replaced with 750mm pipe.
This coupled with rerouting of sewerage pipes will double drainage capacity.
The project extends to the back of Club Narooma where the existing set of 450mm stormwater drainage pipes would be doubled up with an extra series of 450mm pipes, rather than a new set of larger pipes because the ground profile was very shallow.
More stormwater should now be able flow under the new roundabout past the pool and out into Wagonga Inlet, meaning the McMillan Road and Smyth Oval area is less likely to go underwater in the next flood event.
“It’s part of the ongoing management and upgrading of the stormwater system in this low-lying area,” Mr Swallow said.
The work is being done during the closure of Narooma pool to lessen the impact of excavation and the pipe stockpile area on McMillan road will also be remediated.
Council’s own work crews will complete the $140,000 project, the same local workers who recently completed the adjacent streetscaping project.
Drainage is also set to improve on the opposite side of the Flat with better drainage planned as part of road works planned for Riverside Drive north of the McMillan Road roundabout.
Council has also pledged to boost its maintenance schedule and monitoring of the drainage ditch and one-way tidal flaps on that side of the neighbourhood, he said.
