A “Junior Jedi Fun Day” was held at the Narooma Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, Jan. 2 and the light sabers flew as the right to rule the Galaxy was fought out.
This event was PCYC’s first ever summer activity on the Far South Coast and judging by its popularity, it will not be the last.
Based on the popular Star Wars movies; children from as young as 5 up to 12 years old donned their Star Wars attire and engaged with PCYC facilitators in a day of mock light saber duels and dodge ball. Some kids even dressed up as their favourite Star Wars characters such as the popular Jedi Knight, Obi Wan Kenobi.
PCYC manager Gary Traynor who has only been in the role since September 2015 was very pleased with the turn out.
“We have been running a small martial arts class in Moruya which we call ‘Junior Jedis’ for the past 12 months now,” Gary said. “However we decided to bring this activity to Narooma on a much larger scale and I have been bowled over by the positive feedback.”
With the latest in the Star War saga now showing at the Narooma Kinema, the popularity of the event was assured and PCYC has been inundated with requests to do it all over again. So much so, they intend to reschedule the event in the next school holidays during easter. However with an activity such as this, numbers are limited and bookings will be essential.
The Police Citizen’s Youth Club is a not for profit organisation which has been in operation since 1937. It was originally created as a partnership between Police and Rotary to provide young people with a safe and positive alternative to the streets.
While their aim is to get young people active in life, PCYC also conducts programs for adults and the best way to learn what is happening in and around Narooma is to visit their Facebook page or drop in and have a chat with PCYC staff.
Manager Gary Traynor said: “If the PCYC flags are flying out the front of the Leisure Centre, this is a sure sign that somebody is in the office. However as our club is a unique outreach model, we need to service all towns from Batemans Bay down to Eden. So contacting us via the telephone or online is your best option.”
Senior Constable Greg Curry can be contacted on mobile 0447 421 319 or you can reach Gary Traynor on 0421 615 846. Alternatively you can email gtraynor@pcycnsw.org.au after Jan. 25 as PCYC staff are taking a well-earned break.
Two qualified PCYC instructors were brought down from the Illawarra so the Junior Jedi Fun Day could be conducted. In order for this event and other sporting activities to continue on the Far South Coast under the PCYC banner, local volunteers are required.
All you need is a strong sense of fun and a desire to participate in life. So with over 140 approved PCYC activities on their books, if you have some time to spare and wish to get involved, please contact Greg or Gary and “May the Force be with you”.
