The Narooma office of National Parks and Wildlife Service has secured funding to start a program where volunteers undertake weed control works on Montague Island over the next four months.  

The volunteers spend up to six days at a time working on the island under the supervision of National Parks field officers.

Heading out on Wednesday were couples Ian and Linda Parker from Jaspers Brush and Neil and Debbie Schubert from Tuross Head, as well as Brisbane primary school teacher Suzette Holm.

Ms Holm found out about the volunteer program by conducting an online search and then negotiating the trip with National Parks.

“I want to go to give something back to the community and also have an adventure,” she said.

Supervising this first group is field officer Danny Shilling who said the main weed to tackle were the Ipomeia species, otherwise known as morning glory.
