The Narooma Numnutz winter swimmers after some early morning miscommunication decided it would be best to swim at the Narooma Bridge, away from the big swells.
After a quick dunk in the still blue water, the group decided it would be appropriate to got for a ‘swim’ at Bill Smyth Oval, where there was around 1-foot of water. Numnut Trevor Bennett had a real good paddle, as did Paul West from River Cottage Australia, who brought along digger dog.
Yet another group of Narooma swimmers, who missed the earlier swims, decided to go down to Australia Rock and play in the foam with a quick swim across the channel.
All up there were 22 swimmers all up at Narooma, with the water in the main channel being 18 degrees. The soup back at O’Briens Hotel and bistro was spicy sausage.
All are welcome every Sunday at 9am at the south end of Bar Beach. The Numnutz meanwhile are planning to do their swim at Montague Island on Sunday, July 3. All are welcome as two boats are being booked at this stage.
Robert Johnson at the Bermagui Blues Balls reports Sunday morning dawned with two options. One was to act completely irresponsibly, go for an ocean swim and probably end up on the front page of the Narooma News.
The other was to seek a more sheltered location and remain in the Sport section. The Bermagui Blue Balls chose option two. The usual locations of Blue Pool, Beares Beach, Horseshoe Bay, Moorheads Beach and Camel Rock were unsafe and even the harbour's Bruce Steer pool was uninviting on an outgoing tide. Following the overnight deluge Bermagui’s Dickinson Oval was under water and so this became the chosen venue.
“Like opening batsmen, the quorum of Blue Balls strode with purpose from the pavilion to the ankle deep water located mid oval,” Robert said. “Splashing around like birds having a wash the Sunday morning 'swim' was completed to the amusement of passing motorists. So if you're interested in getting wet no matter what the conditions bring your togs, sense of humour and sturdy constitution to Blue Pool at 9am every Sunday.”
Meanwhile it was not all about the East Coast and its low, Bermagui Blue Balls founder Gary Pearse is presently on safari in the Okavango Delta in the African country of Botswana.
In addition to winter swimming in crocodile and hippo infested pools, he has established reciprocal swimming rights with The Botswana Blue Balls. Elephants and hippos will now be permitted to frolic in Horseshoe Bay and refresh at the Bermi pub water hole
Furthermore Gary will be taking auditions for his new movies Bermagui Queen and Out of Cobargo. This will rival locally produced River Cottage but with a twist where the animals eat the chef and guests. Also as a rating booster, local long-standing family feuds will be settled with asagi spears and clubs.
