Eurobodalla Shire Council and the Narooma News have received several complaints about the extent and content of the signs developer Harvey Ball erected last week.
Mr Ball has received correspondence highlighting the council’s concerns.
However, he said the images were chosen from Getty iStock images and were nothing out of the ordinary and he would strenuously defend his “freedom” and rights.
Mr Ball has told the Narooma News the apartments would be made available at low cost to seniors, while the complex would also house his “Forum for a Fairer Australia”.
Mr Ball said he would walk away from the development if the signs had to be removed.
“If the signs come down, then they will be replaced with ‘for sale’ signs, with an added sign saying that Eurobodalla Council is against people’s freedom and my ability to help others,” Mr Ball said.
“I will not be dictated to by the vocal minority who misuse local government or any other authority to threaten me, and so will take actions in damages against those that do.”
Mr Ball said a member of the council’s environmental health office had contacted him and said numerous complaints had been lodged with the council about the signage at 153 Princes Highway, Narooma.
A large number of local residents and business people had contacted the council stating they were offended by the content of the signage, an email to Mr Ball reads.
“Council also has concerns with regard to the appropriateness of the content of the signs and compliance with council policy and conditions of consent,” the email said.
“As such, the matter is currently under investigation and further action may be taken pending discussions with council’s divisional manager development services (this week).”
However, Mr Ball does have the support of Narooma resident Kris Macauley, who said she found nothing offensive about the signs and was surprised the council was demanding they be removed.
Eurobodalla Shire Council has been asked for comment.
