The idea for a tournament at the coast has been floating around for a while but this year it finally happened.
From Wollongong to Tathra, Canberra to Ulladulla, Ultimate Frisbee players converged at the Bill Smyth Oval, Narooma on Saturday and Dalmeny Beach on Sunday, for the inaugural Surf n Turf tournament.
“The friendly service provided by the Narooma and Dalmeny local businesses and Eurobodalla Shire was really appreciated,” said tournament director Emily Stein from Canberra. “With many players from Canberra and the South Coast having an enjoyable weekend, Surf n Turf will be back next year.”
Ultimate Frisbee is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. It is a fast paced sport which combines elements of netball, touch football, and grid-iron. It is a unique sport because it is self-refereed and it is the responsibility of the players to adhere to and oversee the rules of the game.
December 3 was International Spirit of the Game Day, which is highly valued amongst players of all levels. Spirit of the Game is judged by the way players understand and apply the rules, avoid body contact, be fair-minded, communicate with respect and show self-control and a positive attitude.
Games end in a Spirit Circle where players positively connect with the other team and resolve possible conflicts in a positive way.
The tournament brought together players who had never played a game to those who have represented Australia internationally.
Lizzie Croker, a resident of Ulladulla, recognized the potential of the event saying: “It is the beginning of collaboration between Canberra Ultimate and South Coast players”.
