“It was great to see so many groups out and about last week for the NSW Seniors Festival, with a wide range of events and activities to encourage older Australians to age positively,” said IRT Foundation Manager, Toby Dawson.
“The IRT Foundation Community Grants Program is on a mission to help make every week seniors week, by funding these types of initiatives all year round.”
Since the launch of the Community Grants Program in 2015, IRT Foundation has invested almost $300,000 in 32 community projects across IRT's geographic footprint including NSW, the ACT and South-East Queensland.
“We want to support people to participate, contribute and enjoy living as they move from their working life, into retirement and then into later life,” Mr Dawson said.
A great example of this was last year's Tooling and Metal Workshop – an initiative of Narooma Men’s Shed, he said.
“The project provides metal work equipment and a safe working environment for members of the Men’s Shed as well as the local community,” Mr Dawson said.
“The Narooma Men’s Shed used their grant money to employ qualified metal workers to introduce and train participants in the skills of sheet metal work.
“We already have over 20 new applications underway through our easy online application process, so I'd encourage all community groups with a great idea bubbling away to take a look at our website.”
This year, IRT Foundation is looking for projects that encourage social participation for older people in need. They may have difficulty getting involved in the community for a range of reasons. Projects should aim to help older adults to age positively in their communities with independence and dignity.
The Foundation’s Community Grants Program has been designed to support projects that align with the World Health Organization's (WHO) Age-Friendly Cities Framework.
Online applications are invited by March 26. For more information and to apply, go to: www.irtfoundation.org.au
