Coward’s Blithe Spirit has become a favourite of theatre-goers since it was first performed in 1941, and no doubt gave a light-hearted lift to many Londoners during the horrors of the Blitz.
Since then the play has been filmed and televised many times, and is still a big ticket-seller in West End and Broadway theatres.
Blithe Spirit is now about to hit the stage of the Playhouse in Batemans Bay, and this Bay Theatre Players’ production is worthy of the best companies in the world.
It will be a short run – only eight performances – and the Friends of the Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens is delighted that it will host one of them as a fundraiser for an important cause.
The Gardens has become so popular that the Visitors Centre needs enlarging to accommodate ever-increasing numbers of visitors.
The proceeds from the charity performance will be a welcome addition to the required funds.
Patrons at the performance on April 21 will be greeted with drinks and a selection of savoury treats at 7pm before the show starts at 7.30, with more refreshments at interval, all included in the $25 ticket price.
Play director Kath Joyce says the wit of Blithe Spirit is “fresh and timeless”.

The scene is set at a dinner party séance, where the medium has called up the spirit of the host’s first wife.
Thereafter, chaos takes over the household as a scheming and mischievous ghost, reluctant to return to the other side, is let loose.
