Lilly Bennett off to Commonwealth 7s in the Bahamas

Lilly-Rose Bennett of Narooma is heading to the Bahamas this week - but the 16 year old isn’t going to lay on the beach.

She’s made good on the potential Country Rugby League Group 16 chairman Allan Wilton noted earlier this year, earning a spot on the youth girls Commonwealth Games Rugby 7s team.

“I didn’t find out I made it until April,” Lilly said. “Dad rang me - I thought he was mucking around until he started crying. Then I knew he was being serious.”

Lilly has been committed to the sport from a young age, playing with the boys in the Under 8s through to the Under 12s, when she made the switch to league tag.

She went back to union, and was playing both league and union for a time.

“I’m still not sure which I prefer,” she said.

Batemans Bay Boars Rugby Union Club spokesperson Peter Ryan said the club was “very excited”.

“The club has been able to provide some support from both the juniors and seniors – it’s an incredible opportunity,” he said.
