Eurobodalla Council is calling for providers of recreational programs and activities to nominate their venture for a special NSW Seniors Festival celebration in 2018.

The council is hosting a “Come and Try Week” in April 2018 to showcase the diverse creative, cultural, recreational and active health programs available throughout Eurobodalla and to encourage seniors to try something new.

The council has applied for a grant to run the week, which will offer a range of free hour-long activities that might include yoga, swimming, Zumba, tennis and even dance classes. It is hoped participants will continue to patronise the programs.

With news this week that Eurobodalla has the highest ratio in NSW of people over 65 to those of working age – and the sixth highest in Australia – the council’s Community, Arts and Recreation director Kathy Arthur said there was a real need to get our older residents out of the house and into active lifestyles.

“Thirty per cent of Eurobodalla’s population is over 65, while the state and national average is around 16 per cent. At the same time Eurobodalla has a high overall health risk profile compared to the rest of NSW,” she said.

“Older people who are physically active tend to be healthier and happier. The council’s Come and Try Week next year will be the perfect chance for residents to try something new and connect with others in a supportive environment.

“It will also be a great opportunity for businesses and groups to showcase what they do to a captive and engaged audience.”

If you think your business or group could provide suitable activities for the week and you would like to be involved, please contact Volunteer Development Officer Beth Jewell on 4474 1208 or beth.jewell@esc.nsw.gov.au for an expression of interest form.

Applications close Friday, November 10.
