The country's most prestigious annual art competition - The Archibald Prize - has announced its finalists for the 2023 award with 15 of the 57 nominated artists from regional Australia. Six states and territories are represented by the regional artists with the majority hailing from New South Wales. View all the finalists: Most notable is Andrea Huelin of Cairns whose painting of stand-up comedian Cal Wilson won the Packing Room Prize 2023. "Cal brought her creativity and imagination to the sitting, as well as a suitcase full of headpieces and outfits," Ms Huelin said. "I wanted to paint a formal portrait, mocking the 19th-century style in which women were painted in their fancy bonnets and frilly blouses, looking either bored and oblivious, or proud as punch of their best duds. "As often happens, the painting acquired a life of its own." The Archibald Prize 2023 winner will be announced on May 5. A $100,000 prize is awarded for the best portrait of a person 'distinguished in art, letters, science or politics' painted by an Australian resident. The Wynne Prize for best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or to the best example of figure sculpture will be announced on the same day as well as the Sulman Prize for best genre painting or mural project.
