This year the theme at Narooma’s Oyster Festival on Saturday, May 2 is definitely “Waste not, want not”.
Not only will the bins that encourage visitors to the event to separate their waste into food waste, recycling and landfill be back this year, but stall holders now have to have a waste-free stall and there is a recycling themed pedestrian street parade.
The finishing touches are being made to some fabulous sea creatures sculptures being made out of waste and recycling and parade participants are putting their recycled outfits together.
In keeping with the “Love Food, Hate Waste” theme, there will also be some loving of the local hero of the day, the oyster, with some interactive cooking demonstrations.
The idea is that the event this year does not produce waste as we “hate” wasting things, this year’s event coordinator Orit Karny-Winter said.
“A lot of great food ends up in landfill when it needs not,” she said.
“As part of the management of the waste at the festival, the ever popular Neil Davis and his band of helpers will be sorting food from the waste stream, so that every bit of food that can be reused for composting, and is put to good use.
“Members of the public can help by making sure they put the right items in the right bins, which will be colour-coded and located in group of three for waste, recycling and food waste, to make it very easy to source separate.
“Even better, it would be great if everyone took their own waste home, as event stalls will not be generating any landfill waste.”

Fun cooking demonstrations all day
THERE will be a series of fun cooking demonstrations at this year’s Narooma Oyster Festival.
Festival cooking coordinator Judith Cox, of Café Valencia fame, said the cooking demonstrations would this year be combined with the oyster tasting experience, which this year was going to be far more inclusive and affordable.
Entry to the cooking demonstrations that run from 9.15am to 4pm will be by gold coin donation.
The food created by the chefs will also be auctioned with interested persons able to bid on the plates of food.
Legendary performer and gourmand Shanna Provost aka Mable and River Cottage Australia host and chef Paul West will oversee proceedings in the cooking and oyster tasting area.
The chefs signed up for this year’s event are all local skilled cooks.
They include Alan Newbold, owner and executive chef of local mobile catering company Mr Bold Catering Co., who has 25 years’ experience from being executive chef at the award-winning Pumphouse Hotel in Melbourne, to a number of local Narooma restaurants.
Tilba local Phill Stokes will offer his “Kombi Kitchen” featuring his latest preserves and pickles.
He and his partner Felicity in their 1997 VW Kombi “Eccles” will be offering seasonal local, organic/chemical free produce, hand cooked in the traditional style to keep classic recipes alive.
Ex Pro surfer turned chef, Matthew Hoar heads up the small team in The Whale kitchen and will be at this year’s oyster festival.
A local Dalmeny Boy, he is South Coast all the way, preferring local ingredients and simple clean flavours.
His menus are supplemented with foraged food from the beach, the bush, generous friends with an abundance of fresh goodies.
Finally Aunty Viv Mason will be on hand to demonstrate traditional cooking methods employed by local Aboriginal people, particularly for locally harvested seafood.
