Protestor John Ramsey said he feared logging in the State Forest near Narooma would damage the microclimate, dry out the forest and increase fire risk.
“We’ve had 3.8 millimetres of rain recently, but in the forest it is tangibly damp,” Mr Ramsey said.
“Where forestry has logged it is dry. Corunna is the centre of a microclimate, the second most temperate in the world.
“Logging contributes to the risk of fire.”
Councillor Jack Tait said logging was good for “people’s health, and the environment”.
“Planet Ark says the benefits of using timber are proven,” Cr Tait said.
“You cannot knock down forest without one-to-one replacement. Will you come back and tell us that Planet Ark is wrong?”
Despite Cr Tait’s objections, the motion for the council to raise Mr Ramsey’s concerns with forestry was passed.
The council would not formally accept the petition, because it was addressed to Forestry NSW, but agreed to inform forestry the petition had been submitted.
