Forestry Corporation said they were conducting a fuel reduction burn in Benandarah State Forest, west of the Princes Highway, 5km north of Batemans Bay over the next few days.
"Up to 50 hectares of forest will be burned using low intensity fire," a Forestry spokesperson said.
"Motorists using the Princes Highway at Cullendulla are advised that there may be some smoke drift in the area, especially at night and early morning.
"Motorists are asked to switch their headlights on, slow down and take care if visibility is reduced."
The spokesperson said nearby residents should remove washing from clothes lines, and people with respiratory problems should close their windows and doors to prevent smoke entering homes and take other precautions as advised by their doctor.
"The burn area will be closed to the public for one to two weeks. The Shannons Road area will be re-opened for firewood collection once it is safe to re-enter," the spokesperson said.
